When in his over-enthusiasm to increase the number of trains Sheikh Rashid was getting almost every second day new train services inaugurated at the hands of the prime minister he was advised by his well wishers that instead of bloating the train services he had better first improve the existing physical infrastructure of the railways which has gone from bad to worse over the years. He didn’t however, listen to that advice with the result that now he is left with no option but to close down two train services within the current month. Many other train services might meet the same fate soon. The physical infrastructure of the railways need exhaustive overhauling. Not only is there a dire need of improving the cleanliness standard in railway compartments, there is a need to modernise the signal system of the railways so as to obviate the possibility of rail accidents. The railway track needs replacement at many places. If new railway tracks are laid between the capital cities of the provinces and Islamabad secretariat with a view to running special rail car services on them the parliamentarians , business tycoons and the bureaucrats can be made to travel by rail cars to Islamabad in case of their official commitments there. A lot of fuel can be saved through it which is consumed by their travelling to Islamabad in their official cars.
During the past couple of months many train accidents have taken place. The condition of railway compartments hasn’t improved . Trains don’t run on time. The sufferer in the process are the poor as railway is the poor man’s transport.
What a pity that neither railway minister nor other ministers, president or the PM fancy travelling in railway trains.Had they been regular passengers of trains the overall condition of railway would have improved. It seems they consider it infra dig to travel by train.
