There are some areas which require immediate legislation without which myriad problems being faced by the country cannot be solved. For instance, there is an urgent need that land holding per person should be limited to 150 acre irrigated and 1500 acre non-irrigated land. The rest of the land should be nationalised and redistributed to the landless peasants.
A standard of living tax be levied. Those living in posh bungalows constructed over 1 kanal or more than 1 kanal land should pay standard of living tax. The rich who ply cars of prohibitive cost like the BMWs, Mercedes and Land cruisers etc should also be taxed heavily. In the same manner, those whose children study in educational institutions which charge them more than Rs 30000 per month as fee per child should be taxed heavily. Likewise, taxes commensurate with quality and cost of electric gadgetry and furniture being used by the rich should be levied. Those persons who visit Middle East , Europe and the U. S every year not once but many times should also be made to pay heavy taxes.
We need effective legislation for bringing to book those professors who plagiarise the written thesis of foreign authors while writing their PhD thesis as at the moment most of them just don’t get their just deserts even after they are caught red handed.. The reason why smugglers, hoarders, black marketers and those who indulge in the adulteration of food don’t desist from their evil practices is that the punishment prescribed for them is small. It is essential that through new legislation the punishment prescribed for them should be enhanced. There is a need to ensure that that the tax-levying inspectors work honestly and their performance should also be closely monitored as many of them allegedly don’t recover taxes or show leniency with the traders while charging them if they grease their palms
It is a pity that our legislators are not giving due attention to the problems being faced by the general public in many fields of life.
