ISLAMABAD, October 15: A briefing devoted to upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan was held at the Uzbekistan Embassy on Tuesday, October 15th. Main purpose of the event was to brief leading Pakistani media and expert-analytical circles (around 30 people) about organizational measures for preparation of the upcoming elections in Uzbekistan.
Ambassador of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. Furqat Sidiqov in his opening speech stated that Uzbekistan is staying on the eve of a major political process – election of deputies to Legislative Chamber and deputies to Municipal Councils. These elections will play an important role in implementing democratic reforms, as well as achieving strategic development goals for a long period.
Participants were informed that from September 20 of this year election campaign has been started for upcoming parliamentary elections. The elections will be held on December 22 of this year.
Five political parties to nominate their candidates. They will compete for 150 seats in the Oliiy Majlis (legislative chamber of the parliament).
More than 20 million voters, including 2 million young people will vote for the first time. For the first time, parliamentary elections will be held in accordance with the new Electoral Code of Uzbekistan.
The Ambassador said that a ballot box will be placed at the Uzbek Embassy for the Uzbek citizens to cast their vote in Pakistan. He said if any Uzbek citizen will not be able to reach the Embassy premises our staff will go to his or her residence with ballot box.
Dr. Mehmood Ul Hassan Khan, regional expert Uzbekistan and CIS, in his speech emphasized that upcoming elections will be another vivid reflection of the progressive democratic ideas in Uzbekistan. The principles of a multi-party system, political pluralism, pluralism of opinions, openness and transparency, tolerance are increasingly being strengthened in these elections.
Participants of the Briefing highly evaluated the fact that upcoming elections in Uzbekistan is an important political event on the country’s further transition to democracy.
