Sit-ins on public highways cause untold inconvenience and misery for the common man and they also affect his daily chores tremendously. Traffic jams are invariably caused by them as a result of which patients requiring urgent medical treatment cannot reach hospital in time and students miss their classes. Granted that protest demonstration is a basic human right in a democracy but aren’t there many other civilised methods for the protestors to vent their spleen on any issue over which they don’t see eye to eye with the government or want immediate attention of the government towards any problem. It is a pity that instead of agitating issues in parliament which is a proper place for it they prefer to take to the streets. How would the state institutions strike roots in this country if our politicians resort to street agitations?
Why can’t all the political parties sit together and select a place like G-9 Park or the parade ground for holding their public rallies after getting due permission from the district magistrate Islamabad? That would save the common man from a lot of headache and pother.
The persons who had introduced the tradition of sit-ins in the federal capital as well as those who gave a currency to it must share the blame equally for the public inconvenience caused by them. If this trend of forcing the sitting governments to resign through sit-ins wasn’t discouraged this would snowball and get worse with every passing day. If it is not in the interest of the sitting government it is also fatal for the opposition leaders as tomorrow while they are in power they too can be confronted with a similar situation and hoisted with their own petard.
