Road accidents are killing more persons every year than cancer or heart ailment. There is absolutely no control, whatever, of the traffic police over rash and reckless driving which is the main reason of fatalities on the roads. The drivers who indulge in overspeeding are seldom caught by the police. There is also no mechanism in place through which the traffic police could take blood sample of the erring drivers for ascertaining whether or not they are indulging in overspeeding under the spell of the alcohol.
Many fatal road accidents also occur due to bursting of the tyres or break down of tie rods meaning thereby that the traffic police is not exercising due care and control on the fitness condition of the vehicles with the result that many vehicles which are not roadworthy are allowed to ply on the roads. This is not to mention the fact that many drivers are driving vehicles without driving license while many teenagers who are not yet eligible for national identity cards and driving licence also drive vehicles without possessing these necessary legal documents.
It has been noticed that many drivers have no idea, whatever, of the traffic rules.
The traffic police has been quite lax in the enforcement of traffic laws in Islamabad. If this is the state of affairs in the federal capital of the country, one could well imagine what would be the condition in other cities of the country. The traffic police needs a big overhaul otherwise driving vehicles on the roads would become a nightmare before long.
