The decision of the PCB to send a 12-member strong contingent of managerial staff to India for Twenty20 World Cup cricket tournament means that we would be sending two teams to India, one comprising 16-member team which would play in the field and the other consisting of 12 members which would sit on the fences clapping every time our batsmen hit a six or our bowlers take a wicket. Why on earth did the PCB select such a big contingent of hangers- on? Two coaches, a manager and a physiotherapist was all that was needed. Who knows sometime midway through the tournament the chairman and other big gun in the PCB along with their spouses also make it to India to see the matches? When will learn not to squander money on non-productive pursuits?
It goes without saying that Altaf Hussain is keeping a frail health, mentally as well as physically. The common perception which has gained currency among the people is that attempts are being made to bring to the fore some of his blue-eyed boys for forming a new political party. It is premature to predict the fate of this newly-hatched plan. A similar attempt could not succeed in 1992. Whether this time round it is going to succeed would be known in the next few days. Mustafa Kamal is, at the moment, living on his past reputation. His track record as mayor of Karachi is his biggest asset. If the forces which are trying to create a new political party out of the womb of MQM headed by Altaf Hussain want to alienate and wean away from him the urdu speaking population of Sind, they would have to take concrete steps for redressing their grievances which are being exploited by the ailing head of the MQM.
Is it true that on the sly we have joined the 34-countries military alliance cooked up by Riyadh? What does the invitation of Saudi government to our prime minister to witness military exercises in Saudi Arabia mean? Many eyebrows are being raised over this invitation.
