It is unfortunate that the quality of debate in parliament has been going down from bad to worse. Those of us who have heard parliamentarians like Mumtaz Daultana, Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, Abdul Wali Khan, Suhurwardy, Baqi Baloch, Maulvi Farid, Khan Abdul Qaiyum Khan, Ghaus Baksh Bizenjo, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and their likes, to mention a few, feel utterly disappointed over the tone and tenor of most of the present parliamentarians, who more often than not, speak on non-issues rather than touching upon issues confronting the country. Moreover, they indulge in rhetoric which is obscene without realising that some of the members of parliament are womenfolk.
Tolerance to listen patiently any point of view which is contrary to theirs is also in short supply among many present parliamentarians.
It has become essential for the heads of political parties to properly train their elected parliamentarians as to the norms which they have to follow meticulously while sitting in the assemblies. A crash training course for them can be organised before they take oath as member after every election otherwise they would always become a laughing stock of those who view the proceedings of the assemblies critically.
The heads of political parties should appoint hard task masters as the parliamentary whips of their parties in the assemblies who could ensure the presence of their MNAs and MPAs during the course of every session of the Assembly as the electorate has started raising its eyebrows over the frequent adjournment of the proceedings of the assemblies due to lack of quorum. The common man rightly asks that what is the point in spending a big amount out of taxpayers’money on the upkeep of assemblies if their members keep on absenting themselves frequently from attending their proceedings?
