Trump doesn’t want to displease New Delhi as he has to use India as a bulwark against China . Simultaneously , he also doesn’t want to annoy Pakistan as Islamabad is a key factor in his effort to hit it off with the Taliban and that was the precise reason why the speeches of the American president during his recent sojourn to India were couched in very cautious words. Let it be admitted that as a result of an agreement reached at between the two countries during Trump’s visit to India, the latter will be getting sophisticated weaponry from Washington, which will naturally touch off fresh arms race in the sub_continent as Pakistan, will have to, Willy nilly, buy the state-of-the-art weapons from international market in order to offset the military imbalance created by the purchase of heavy weaponry by the Indians from the US.
The American president during the course of his recent visit to India made a ridiculous statement that he was ready to mediate over the Kashmir issue. May one ask him what is he talking about? Is there any need of mediation in the matter in the presence of UN resolution of 1948 in which India had promised to hold a plebscite in the occupied territory of Kashmir? It had been taking a refuge under the Simla agreement since 1971 by wrongly interpreting that it had been laid down in it that both Pakistan and India will resolve their disputes through bilateral talks Even if one were to admit this stand of it for argument’s sake, isn’t the Simla accord dead now, no longer operative after India’s recent decision to finish the special status of the occupied valley?
