Moscow sees the prospect of Russia’s participation in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project as “politically attractive”, the Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov told TASS in an interview. In response to a question whether Moscow considers participation in this project amid intensified talks on it following the recent developments in Afghanistan, Kabul said “Such perspective appears politically attractive. The matters of supporting security for this project earlier considered to be the most challenging have lost their acuteness at this stage”.
At the same time, the diplomat said the last word on participation in the gas pipeline project will remain with Russian economic entities. “Everything will depend on the commercial side of the issue, on profitability of their participation in implementation of this project,” Kabulov added. The TAPI pipeline with a length of 1,814 kilometers is expected to transport 33 billion cubic meters (bcm) of Turkmen natural gas a year.
