ISLAMABAD, March 25: The Supreme Court (SC) has warned the federation and provinces to get ready for consequences if court orders were not implemented regarding the local government (LG) system.
While taking up a petition filed against non-transferring of powers to people representatives elected in LG polls, a three-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Friday remarked” the joke in the name of democracy is known to all. If powers are not transferred to elected representatives of local government, then, how the problems being faced by the people will be solved”.
Justice Khilji Arif Hussain remarked “if powers are transferred to elected representatives of local government then these will automatically be devolved to the common man”.
The petitioner Rab Nawaz took the plea that the LG polls have taken place but powers have not been transferred to elected representatives so far. The people were not enjoying the fruits of LG system due to unnecessary delay in devolution of powere. “Not a single penny has been given to the local representatives in Balochistan. The court had ordered for devolving powers at grass root level but it was not implemented,” the petitioner said.
He prayed the court to issue contempt of court notice to the prime minister on non compliance of the orders.
The court issued notices to all four chief secretaries and five local government secretaries including Islamabad and sought replies from them till the third week of April. -Online
