ISLAMABAD, June 26: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja Sunday invited the delegation of MuttahidaQaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) for a meeting with him for the removal of their reservations on the local bodies’ elections in Sindh.
The chief election commissioner said that the MQM-P’s concerns regarding the local bodies’ elections, electoral rolls and the demarcation of constituencies in Sindh would be removed. “The election commission secretary has been directed to contact the aforementioned party immediately,” he added.
Earlier, the MQM-P leaders, while addressing a press conference in Karachi, expressed concerns over brawls at polling stations during local bodies’ polls in Sindh. “Are elections held like this?” questioned MQM-P leader Wasim Akhtar.
“Steps should be taken to hold transparent elections. A farce is being played in the name of elections in Sindh,” said Wasim Akhtar. “Elections should be stopped in Sukkur, Nawabshah and MirpurKhas,” he demanded, adding that all the political parties were raising questions on the electoral process.
“The way the elections are being held, it is a big question on the performance of the officials,” he said, adding: “There is an atmosphere of fear in constituencies under which transparent elections cannot be held.”
“Our concerns regarding the electoral process should be removed first, and then elections should be held,” he demanded. -DNA
